Spirits Of The Times
Yesterday's post about the mysterious disappearance of "alcoholic health drinks" from supermarket shelves has stirred a lot of interest.
Indcoup, in an email, reminded me that Carrefour has just been declared guilty of
unfair business practices.
Carrefour imposes a minus margin penalty on a supplier that sells its products at a lower price to a competitor and the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) has imposed a fine of Rp.1.5 billion (US$148,515) fine on the company and demanded it stop the much-disputed terms of trade.
Carrefour has lodged an appeal with the Supreme Court, but I fail to see what this has to do with the disappearance of liquor and wines from their shelves, and those of other supermarkets.
A comment from Mr. Anon said that he
visited Sogo on the day they were boxing up their wine shelves etc. That was 2 weeks ago. (The) store rep. told me they we doing so becos of "a sensitive security situation concerning the police and government".
Bizarre to say the least.
Still, some good news for non-teetotallers comes from another correspondent, MH, who has emailed the following:
I noticed they removed the wines and spirits from most supermarket shelves a couple of weeks ago.
But Sogo in Plaza Senayan, Hero in Sarinah and Sogo in Plaza Indonesia have all since restocked the shelves.
Asia Through a Glass Darkly indeed.
